Marcio Freitas is a theatre artist, working as a director, playwright, actor, researcher and teacher. He is the founder of theatre ensemble Teatro Número Três, with which he has devised and directed the plays Sem falsidades (2011), Pequenas biografias (2014) and Viagem a Nova York (2018). He has also directed the play-as-film Intruder, by Maurice Maeterlinck (2020), the web series Moermemória (2021) and the audiovisual experiment A vida secreta de Cassiane (2022). In 2023, he directed Purple, by Jon Fosse.
Since 2023, he is a full-time professor at the Theater Theory department at UNIRIO. He concluded his Ph.D. in Performing Arts at UNIRIO in 2017, his Master’s degree in 2012 and his Bachelor’s degree in 2010. He was a Postdoctoral researcher at the Performing Arts program at UNIRIO for 4 years, and a substitute professor for 2 years at the Theatre department at the School of Fine Arts at UFRJ.
In 2021, he published the book Desvios de mim: autorrepresentação e cena teatral contemporânea, taken from his Doctoral research.
He obtained his acting degree from Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras in 2005. As an actor, he has worked in Jorge Andrade’s Vereda da Salvação, directed by João Fonseca (2005), in Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, directed by Diego Molina (2006), and in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Moacir Chaves (2007). With Era uma galera theater group, he acted in A viagem de Zenão (2008-14) and in Como ter uma ideia (2010), both plays by Carlos Cardoso. With Teatro de Nós theater group, he acted in Joaquim e as estrelas (2010-12), by Renata Mizrahi, and in Bette Davis e a máquina de coca-cola (2013), by Mizrahi and Jô Bilac. With Teatro Portátil theater group, he acted in Nelson Rodrigues’ Pretty but wicked (2015). Recently, he acted in Anton Chekhov’s Three sisters (2015-17) and in Liv Ataíde’s Ilha de sal (2019), both times directed by Morena Cattoni, and in the videos Intruder (2020) and Moermemória (2021), by Teatro Número Três.
He was the assistant editor of Revista Folhetim (2007-10), a journal by Teatro do Pequeno Gesto, and of the academic journal O Percevejo online (2011-13). He was a founding member of the electronic journal Questão de crítica (2008). He was a writer and a researcher for Itaú Cultural’s online theater encyclopedia (2008-10). As a Junior reseacher, he investigated migrations from literature to the stage. During his Master’s research, he investigated aspects of the voice of the actor in contemporary theater from Brazil. For his Ph.D. study, he investigated documentary and autobiographical theater.
